In 2010, Greif developed a revolutionary tool in the industry allowing customers to discover possible alternatives to reduce their carbon footprint from our range of industrial packaging products.

Greif’s Green Tool provides quick and simple access to information on the environmental footprint of plastic drums, steel drums, Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs), fibre drums, as well as, big bags. It is based on life cycle analyses (LCA) conducted on Greif’s industrial packaging products in Europe in 2009. To date, the LCA is the preferred method to examine the environmental performance of a product. LCA is an approach to put life cycle thinking into practice and has become a widely recognized and standardized tool. The international standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 provide a basis for a formalized analysis of environmental impacts of a product or service over its entire life cycle.

The Greif Green Tool is simple to use and more than 50 customers have utilized the Greif Green Tool to discover how they can reduce their carbon footprint. For example, let’s look at one customer who purchases steel drums, plastic drums and IBCs. Thanks to the green tool, this customer has been able to identify an opportunity to reduce its carbon footprint by approximately 500 tons of CO2 per year.
